Let’s all become a paperless world

Okay so we live organic and get our baby only natural products and we are hoping for an answer to petro soon.  What else is up there that we can do to lower our footprint on our wonderful planet.

This is going to sound silly but I am in a class and one of the things we had to do was to memorize a bunch of terms.  I immediately thought I had to go out and and buy some paper flash cards.

I did a quick google search and wallaa…. low and behold there is an online flash card site.  They even have categories from previous people that you can use.  http://www.flashcardmachine.com/

We as a company at All About Organic pretty much are entirely paperless.  That means no statements, no checks and no old fashioned file cabinets filled with old docs.  The down side being if the internet was ever wiped out I guess we would have to start over.  Ohh well i’m willing to take that risk.  We would like to hear from you on some more creative ways to cut down on using paper.

Organic Baby Clothes and why its just so darn good

Every parent wants what best for there babies.  There are a ton of decisions out there with doctors, food, toys, and of course clothing.  The good news is that we as a world are becoming more conscious with what we buy.  (reading labels is a good thing)

Let’s just chat about clothing and the undisputed winner in that decision battle is Organic Baby Clothing.

In making these organic baby bedding and organic baby clothes, only organic cotton is used. These materials do not contain harmful dyes, heavy metals, and pesticides.

Non-organic baby apparel, on the other hand, is made from cotton that have been produced and cultivated with the heavy use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

The fact that organic products are manufactured without toxic chemicals, people are starting to realize how important this is.    They are good and friendly on nature and to one’s health. And this is a good indication that more and more people are getting aware of the precarious condition of Mother Nature and are doing something about it.

Organic products are good not only for grownups but also for babies. This is because of the babies’ propensity to just pop in anything that they can get their hold of into their mouths like pillow covers, toys, and sleeves. If you buy non-natural clothes for them and they chew on non-organic materials, your baby could be in great risk.

Just be aware of what you are buying and read the labels.  Allot of the stuff at the big chains like Wal-Mart, Target, and K-mart are all manufactured as cheap as possible.  Unless we as consumers demand it and they see there is a profit in doing it the right way then they will keep producing what sells.  I know that’s a stinker but it is capitalism.  Take a look the next time you walk down the dairy isles in super Wal-mart and you will start to see that they are paying attention to organic foods and small non-conglomerate farmers.  That is a very good sign.

Ohh, those cute little socks at the top.  Adorable and 100% Organic.  Who says we have to sacrifice style for healthy living!!  Click here to check out some more of our organic baby socks….    http://www.myorganicbabystore.com/Organic-baby-socks-s/144.htm

Keep Your Kids Safe While With A Child Locator Device

I know it’s a tough topic to talk about and we all think that we have eyes in back of our heads.  I’m a little undecided on this topic but I will put the info out there and let you be the judge.  In my eyes there is no bigger crime in the world then the abduction of a child. Hearing stories about how a child is taken from a parent is just heart wrenching.  It’s safe to say that your child is not safe out there in today’s world and even though we do our best to watch them every second there is definitely a need for a back up plan.

We here at MOBS have done the research and there are a few companies out there that stand out.

It’s a fact that 2,200 children go missing every day.

http://www.missingkids.com/missingkids/servlet/PageServlet?LanguageCountry=en_US&PageId=2810#1

Most children around 7 have cell phones and you can add that feature.  Contact your local provider and they can walk you through the details.  If your child is too young for that there are two companies that we recommend.  Both have gps tracking systems that you can place in a backpack or attach to a wrist.

We found that Brickhouse is the best for immediate child location.

http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/child-locator.html

These little suckers are indestructable and are a perfect accessory if you just want something to clamp on in say an airport terminal, theme park, pool area.. etc…

The next step up in safety would be the Amber Alert.  They have pretty neat arm bands available that don’t look like atrocities.  You can also always track them via Iphone, internet, or calling in.  Check them out here.

Natural wood and Organic Teething for your baby

When babies are teething, they tend to put any new item directly into the mouth. Partly curiosity and partly an attempt at pain management, infants feel the urge to bite and chew. As the teeth are growing, the cells in the gum tissue above the teeth begin to break down, which helps the teeth slide through. The urge to bite or chew is a good thing, because the added pressure helps break down the gum tissue. Give your child something to chew on! You can find homeopathic ice pops, teething cookies, tablets and gels to help relieve your baby’s teething pain.

With all the scare today of lead paint in toys, more and more parents are considering natural and organic baby toys made here in the USA.

Natural wooden toys are still the best and last the longest.  Plastic toys are harmful for babies to chew on and a good old wooden rattle will feel the best on the gums of a teething baby.

Click here to visit our teething section:  http://www.myorganicbabystore.com/Organic-Baby-Rattles-s/153.htm

We also carry a large selection of organic toys.  With organic toys, you also know that your baby is not ingesting anything harmful.

To view our organic baby toys, please see the following links:  http://www.myorganicbabystore.com/Organic-Baby-Toys-Dolls-s/112.htm

If you are interested in our new wooden rattles, teething toys and also wooden spoons (we also are carrying bamboo baby utensils too!),  We know how important it is making sure that our baby is as safe and healthy as possible.  We would love to hear if there is something else out there that you parents love.  Let us know!!!

Microwaving Plastic – Some Facts to think about

eco friendly warming plate

Don’t get me wrong the microwave is a wonderful invention.  Plastic as well.  But you have to  admit we all kind of have that funny feeling when we stand in front of the microwave or watch our plastic container melt before our eyes if we leave something in for too long.

I thought I would give a two part argument and let you decide.  It’s always good to go to the source so I went to plasticsinfo.org and got there take on the matter.

**special editors note that the entire first page on a google ” is it safe to microwave plastic” search were all sites that supported microwaving plastic***  food  for thought

Essentially they say it’s safe.  They highly recommend microwave safe plastic and frown upon re-usable containers where they say  “It is not likely that microwaving with these containers presents any health risk.”

hmmm.. that certainly does not give me the warm and fuzzies

They also go on to add plastic wrap on top of any meal is okay as long as it doesn’t get too hot and melt the wrap.  Pretty vague stuff but they do get pretty darn blunt and say the Johns Hopkins email alleging that microwaving food in plastic containers releases dioxins is a hoax.  Okay i can buy that.

Over at our trusted FDA site they do confirm that a small amount of diethylhexyl adipate leaks out into the food when you microwave plastic.

Okay that’s a FACT

I thought i would go ahead and get the definition of DIETHYLHEXYL ADIPATE.

Use

DEHA is used as a functional hydraulic fluid, and a component of aircraft lubricants. It is sometimes also used as an ingredient in PVC-based plastic wrap.

Toxicity

DEHA has been demonstrated to induce liver adenomas and carcinomas in mice but not in rats. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), it is “not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans (Group 3),”[1] suggesting inadequate evidence of human carcinogenicity.[2] While once on a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency‎ list of toxic chemicals under the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act, it has been removed because it “cannot be reasonably anticipated to cause [...] irreversible chronic health effects.”[3]

Yikes

The FDA’s Ms. Bailey does say the agency does what it can to monitor new plastics, but if a product is marketed as microwavable, it’s up to the manufacturer to demonstrate its safety. While declaring there’s no cause for alarm, she says the FDA continues to monitor microwave cookware: “If we see a material that causes concern, we’ll take action on it.”

Well mom’s and dad’s I’m sold and am glad I did this post.  It’s quite obvious that plastic companies will say that it’s completely safe and the FDA says it does release but there is not enough conclusive evidence that it’s in harmful amounts.

No thanks and I’ll just stay clear of it.

If you are going to use plastic ware for you little one do NOT microwave it.  If you are looking for a different alternative altogether check out our BPA, PVC and phthalate free Organic Baby Bowls and Spoons here.

That’s the news and I’m otta here……

Lead Toys

It’s very upsetting as a parent to keep hearing the news about lead tainted toys and wondering if our children have been exposed to any or if we have any in our home.  Even as an organic/natural family, we have been given plastic toys over the years.  I have never been one to endorse purchasing them, but our children have been given gifts from family and friends and I am certain some have been made in China. I am now ready to get rid of all of our plastic toys in the home!  It really concerns me as a parent.

Lead can cuase brain damage and learning disabilities in children.  It is a neurotoxic heavy metal.

What can you do as a parent?

Purchase toys domestically made here in the USA and avoid the cheap plastic and metal ones.

Check for recalls by going to www.recalls.gov or www.cpsc.gov

Purchase natural, unfinished wooden toys.  I still love the old fashioned wood toys the best.  For babies, the wooden rattles are always the best.  I really dislike any plastic ones.  Plastic itself is unhealthy.  Also purchase organic toys that contain only organic cotton.

Natural Skin Care for your baby

Earth Mama Angel Baby Products – Natural Skin Care for your baby

4/22/2010

Virtually everything we put on our baby’s skin is absorbed directly into their body.  Little ones, especially newborns and young children are especially vulnerable to the chemicals and pesticides found in much of the skin care available today.  If you just take a look at the labels found on many of the skin care items found on the market, you will notice many ingredients listed that will not even be familiar to you.

An excellent source for information on the products you are using is a web site called Skin Deep.  The URL is found at: http://ewg.org/reports/skindeep2/index.php Here you will find information on most any product you are currently using on you or your baby.  You may look it up by brand and it will give you safety ratings on over 14,000 products.  The following is a news release on Skin Deep:
